Description: Al Herbach concentrates his practice in business advising, finance, operations and information technology acquisition and implementation. His clients are small- and medium-sized companies with specialization in technology-oriented companies, professional services firms, retail ventures and entrepreneurs. Al is an owner and director of Schmaltz Delicatessen, a Jewish deli concept, based in the Chicago suburbs. He is also a member of the board of advisors for Lakeshore Branding and Tech@Cost. Al facilitates an entrepreneurial peer-to-peer roundtable for second stage business owners, sponsored by DePaul University’s Coleman Entrepreneurship Center. He has experience as a chief operating officer, managing director, senior vice president of worldwide professional services and founder of several businesses.

He previously was Chief Operating Officer of illuma, a recruitment management firm based in Chicago. Al was previously owner and Executive Vice President of Systems Start-Up, Ltd., a software consulting firm specializing in modification and implementation of Computer Associates’ ERP product, CA-PRMS. He led the team that coordinated the sale of Systems Start-Up to Computer Associates in 1997. After the sale was completed, he managed the ERP Professional Services group within Computer Associates as Senior Vice President. Al received his B.S. in Computer Science from Michigan State University and MBA with a concentration in Entrepreneurship from DePaul University. He is a member of the Advisory Board for the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center at DePaul University and a mentor to entrepreneurial students at DePaul University through the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center’s Blueprint Program. Recently, he was awarded the Alumni Award by the DePaul University Coleman Entrepreneurship Center. To others, Al describes his work as “helping small businesses become viable.”
